Sacred Heart School (K-8) is a proud participant in the Accelerated Reader program. Accelerated Reader is an assessment tool which aides our teachers in a variety of ways with regards to student reading. The program provides an assessment of a student's reading level and comprehension level in addition to suggesting other titles that are within a student's reading level.
There are three steps to using Accelerated Reader. First, students choose and read a fiction or non-fiction book, textbook, or magazine. Teachers monitor reading including guided, paired, literature-based, and textbook reading. Students then log on to the Accelerated Reader web site and complete a test. The teacher receives information that is intended to assist, motivate reading, monitor progress, and target instruction. Reports regarding reading level and comprehension skills are available through the software. This information is shared with the student's parent(s) on a quarterly basis during Parent/Teacher Conferences.
AR’s advanced technology helps our teachers to:
Make essential reading practice more effective for every student.
Personalize reading practice to each student’s current level.
Manage all reading activities including read to, read with, and read independently.
Assess students’ reading with four types of quizzes: Reading Practice, Vocabulary Practice, Literacy Skills, and Textbook Quizzes.
Students do receive a grade for their Accelerated Reading throughout the year, and are also able to earn prizes and special rewards for meeting AR goals and school contests. This is a fun and engaging opportunity for Sacred Heart School teachers to build the students' reading capabilities.
