About Us

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has enjoyed a long and vibrant history beginning in 1892. The present church "in the round" was built on South Henrietta Street, and is the home to over 930 parish families. We thank you for seeking additional information about our Church and School. Great things are happening at Sacred Heart Parish, and we're glad that you're here!

The Pastoral Team at Sacred Heart Parish consists of Fr. Chris Brey, Pastor, Fr. Michal Rosa (residing at Sacred Heart Rectory) and Fr. Zach Edgar. Our parish family is united in making God's presence a greater felt reality among us - a presence in both word and deed.

We invite you to join us for our weekend liturgies or stop in to the church for quiet prayer and reflection. Our parish family welcomes you and your family, and we urge you to fellowship with us at our various church and school events, such as Coffee & Donuts, Lenten Fish Fry's, Soup Suppers, Annual Parish Picnic, and much more. Please see our Parish Calendar for upcoming events.

If you have questions, or would like to learn more about becoming a member of Sacred Heart Parish, please contact us at 217.347.7177 or download a Sacred Heart Church registration form and return it to parish office or drop in the collection basket during Mass.

We look forward to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with you and your family!

Fr. Chris Brey has office hours at Sacred Heart on Wednesdays and Fridays. Fr. Michal Rosa has office hours at Sacred Heart on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Our Heritage

Sacred Heart began from the desire of nine lay Catholics to organize an English speaking parish. Bishop James Ryan granted permission and formally opened the church in 1892 with Fr. Patrick Ducey as its first pastor. Under the tenure of Fr. Gerald Wiegand, Sacred Heart Parish outgrew the original church and nearly eight decades later, established a new home for parishioners. In 1969, Bishop William O'Connor dedicated the current church in the round located at the corner of Fayette & Keller Avenue in Effingham.

In 2014, Fr. Chris Brey became pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Effingham, and we share two Parochial Vicars: Fr.Michal Rosa (residing at Sacred Heart rectory)
and Fr. Zach Edgar (residing at St. Anthony rectory). They, along with our parish family, are working to make God's presence a greater felt reality among us - a presence in both word and deed.
